Ex Scotland Scrum-half Caity Mattinson has joined Scottish Rugby as a skills coach.
The 37-cap Scotland international will focus on the individual development of young players within the union’s pathway system. The role is supported by funding from Sport Scotland.
Mattinson retired after the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 and has since coached at the Coventry Rugby Academy and worked as a schools rugby manager at Banbury RFC.
“I’m delighted to be back in Scotland,” said Mattinson. “I coached in a number of settings during my playing career and, after retiring, threw myself into every opportunity that came my way.
“One of those opportunities was to get involved with U21 Scotland around the world Six Nations period. I relished the opportunity to help shape the next generation and finished the campaign desperate for more time to coach that group.
“Being offered a full-time role on the road is an incredibly exciting next step in my coaching journey. I hope it will allow me to make a positive impact on the players coming through, while continuing to learn and develop my career. I can’t wait to get started.”
During her playing career, Mattinson represented Scotland at two Women’s Rugby World Cups and two WXV 2 tournaments. She also represented the country in Rugby Week at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
She recently worked with Scotland Under-21s during the U21 Women’s Six Nations Series and on the team’s next trip to Italy.
In his new role, Mattinson will lead the development and delivery of specialist skills programmes, while supporting player identification and profiling.
Andy Rhys Jones, Scottish Rugby’s head of women’s performance and pathways, welcomed her appointment.
“I’m delighted to have Caity Mattinson back in Scottish rugby as a Pathways Skills coach,” he said.
“Having represented Scotland throughout her playing career and continuing to develop her coaching experience since retiring, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise which will be invaluable in supporting the next generation of players through our National Talent Pathway, National Academy Program and wider programme.
“Caity is a well-respected and talented coach who we know will greatly contribute to the development of our players along the way.
“We are committed to providing our young players with the best possible environment to develop their skills and fulfill their potential. The support provided through Sportscot funding is hugely appreciated and will enable us to provide vital coaching support as players progress through our pathway system.”
