Liverpool need an answer and they will have to find it against one of their own. Andoni Iraola’s side travel to Istanbul on Wednesday evening to face a Fenerbahçe side now managed by former Anfield favorite Dirk Kuyt, three days after a frustrating 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.
Kurt had been working as an assistant coach but was handed the reins on an interim basis after İsmail Kartal stepped down following the 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray. Fenerbahçe have said Kuyt will remain in charge “until a new coach is appointed”.
He is fondly remembered in Merseyside. Kuyt scored 71 goals in 285 games over six years at Liverpool, played in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan and won the League Cup in 2012. He also knows Fenerbahçe well, having won the Süper Lig title with them as a player in 2014.
His first game in charge did not go as planned. Fenerbahçe lost 2-1 at home to Göztepe on Saturday, leaving them sixth in the Süper Lig and nine points behind Galatasaray. Kuyt apologized to fans afterwards. “I apologize to Fenerbahçe fans, they deserve better,” he said. “Sometimes, we can be very fragile.”
Things are not better in Europe. Fenerbahçe is 31st in the table of 36 teams, with only two points from three games. They drew with Roma and Slavia Prague, but were thrashed 6-0 by Aston Villa, and have conceded nine goals in the competition, the joint-most of any team. They have won just one of their last five games in all competitions.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have a perfect record in the Champions League. They have won all three games in the league stage, against Atlético de Madrid, LASK and Villarreal, and they are in the top four. They have not been watertight, however. He has conceded seven goals in those three games, and his last two Champions League games have produced 16 goals, with a 6-3 win in Austria followed by a 4-3 comeback win against Villarreal.
Sunday’s defeat at Anfield ended a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions, and Iraola will want a quick reaction.
This will be the first time the two clubs meet in European competition.

Fenerbahce vs Liverpool Champions League team news
Ryan Gravenberch has been ruled out with a heel problem. The Dutchman joins Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley on the sidelines.
Dominik Szoboszlai is back in contention, and with Gravenberch gone, he could play a deeper role in midfield. Szoboszlai said he is happy to play wherever Iraola needs him: “As a six, to take the ball from Virgil and do things from there. As a 10 I think I can be dangerous as well, and as an eight. Wherever I am put, I try to do my best.”
Victor Munoz is pushing to start ahead of Bradley Barcola or Cody Gakpo, and Iraola could rotate a lot, with this the eighth game in a nine-game hitting streak in 29 days. Alexander Isak has six goals in eight games this season but is yet to score in the Champions League.
For Fenerbahçe, Nathan Ake is out, as is Marco Asensio while Mason Greenwood is a doubt. Ederson is expected to start in goal against their former Premier League rivals.

Prediction Fenerbahce-Liverpool
Fenerbahce have a good side on paper, but defeat at Villa shows that some of their aging stars may have run out of gas. Liverpool know another win would put them in a great position to qualify and potentially rest players towards the end of the league stage.
