September 8 – Deportivo Toluca lifted the 2026 Copa de Ligas, beating CF Monterrey 2-0 in the final in Houston, becoming the first Liga MX club to win the competition in its modern, Concacaf-sanctioned era.
Toluca scored early, Alexis Vega finishing with a rebound in the fourth minute after Federico Viñas’ effort hit the post. Goalkeeper Hugo González then made a crucial save just after the half-hour mark to keep the scoreline intact, before Helinho, named man of the match, sealed it in the 70th minute on the stroke of half-time.
The result gives Toluca a place directly in the last 16 of the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup, and crowns an all-Liga MX podium, with runner-up Monterrey and León third after beating America in the third-place match.
That clean sweep is the real story here. In a competition created to pit MLS against Liga MX, Mexican teams each took the top three spots, a strong statement about where the balance of power lies right now.
There was a ceremony to coincide with the milestone. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández presented the trophy and performed the first flip of its double-sided design from MLS to Liga MX, meaning it will be engraved for the first time in Liga MX.
The final saw a sellout crowd of 21,144, surpassing the one million tournament attendance. Vega earned the MVP, with Daniel Arcila of León and Myrto Uzuni of Austin sharing the Golden Boot.
A first League Cup for Toluca, and a night that belonged entirely to Mexico.
