Crystal Palace v Liverpool Preview
Two clubs in need of a response meet at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon. by Pierre Sage Crystal Palace are in the relegation zone and badly out of form, while Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool they have lost back-to-back games for the first time all season.
Liverpool’s week has been frustrating. A 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal was followed by a 3-2 loss to Fenerbahçe in the Champions League on Wednesday, although Iraola’s side took the lead twice in Istanbul.
“Now, two defeats, it changes. It has to change and it has to be like this in a club like ours. Now we have to react after two defeats,” he said. “We need the win against Palace away from home and I think we’ve been in similar situations – I remember Bournemouth before the international break, even the Brentford game. So we have to go there and do the job and win the game.”
Liverpool’s away form in the Premier League gives them some encouragement. They have won their last three league games on the road.
There is an additional twist to this one. When Oliver Glasner left Selhurst Park in the summer, Iraola was Palace’s front-runner to replace him, before opening talks with Liverpool following the sacking of Arne Slot.
The palace is in a much worse condition. Pierre Sage was appointed in the summer but the former Lens boss is under increasing pressure from supporters. Palace are 18th with seven points from nine games and have lost their last three League games by two or more goals, including a 5-0 drubbing at rivals Brighton and a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham last weekend.
Palace allow 2.73 expected goals per game, and have suffered six defeats in La Liga, the joint-most in the division.
Iraola hopes that little has changed in the way Palau play, despite the change of coach in the summer. “I think even if they change managers, there’s a continuity in terms of the system being more or less the same, the players are very familiar with the things they’re trying to do,” he said.
At least there was relief on Thursday night. Ten-man Palace drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim in the Europa League, with Daichi Kamada scoring a late equalizer after Adam Wharton was sent off. This came after a win over Fulham in the EFL Cup.
History offers mixed signals. Liverpool have won 36 of the 67 games between the clubs, and Palace have lost nine of their last 11 home games against them. But Palace won 2-1 at Selhurst Park in the league last season and also knocked Liverpool out of the EFL Cup with a 3-0 win at Anfield.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool team news
Palace will be without Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is suspended after being sent off against Tottenham. Jørgen Strand Larsen will lead the line in his place.
Chadi Riad, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ismaïla Sarr are injured. Wharton’s red card against Hoffenheim was in Europe, so it’s available here. Dean Henderson is expected to start in goal.
For Liverpool, Alisson will be expected to keep his place in goal despite a couple of recent mistakes. Milos Kerkez and Ronald Araújo should return at full-back after being named on the bench in Istanbul, with Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet continuing at centre-back.
Ryan Gravenberch is Liverpool’s only doubt. He has a fractured heel and missed the Arsenal and Fenerbahçe games. “Ryan is a day-to-day thing and a matter of pain. Let’s see if he can deal with the pain and help us,” said Iraola. Trey Nyoni is expected to keep his place in midfield if Gravenberch is not ready.
Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong remain out. Iraola also confirmed that Bradley Barcola will play as a winger “90% of the time”, ruling out a move to a central goal role.
