Chelsea put more pressure Manchester United manager Michael Carrick with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge as Lisandro Martinez was sent off during a disastrous second half for the visitors.

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring five minutes after the restart before Cole Palmer converted a penalty after Martinez was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The result extended United’s winless streak to nine games in all competitions, their worst run since the 1988-89 season, while Chelsea capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes to secure all three points.

United squandered chances in an entertaining first half

Chelsea started positively, with Estevao lively in his first Premier League start of season

The Brazilian thought he had opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he converted the rebound after Pedro Neto’s effort was saved by Senne Lammens, but the offside flag ruled out his goal.

United responded with a series of promising attacks and should have gone ahead four minutes later.

Bryan Mbeumo teed up Bruno Fernandes on goal, but the United captain fired a left-footed shot over the bar with only Mike Penders to beat.

Fernandes then sent a dangerous ball into the six-yard box, although Mbeumo didn’t quite make contact.

Amad Diallo was another bright spark for the visitors, forcing Penders into a save from distance before dispossessing Wesley Fofana and running into the penalty area, only to be denied by the Chelsea keeper.

United thought they had finally broken the deadlock in the 34th minute when Matheus Cunha deflected Harry Maguire’s header from a Fernandes corner.

However, a VAR review showed that Cunha had strayed offside and the goal was disallowed.

Chelsea almost punished United soon after when Palmer’s corner was headed wide by Fofana, with the ball deflecting off Moises Caicedo and hitting the post.

Amad then squandered arguably the best chance of the half after capitalizing on another Fofana error, lifting his finish over the crossbar when clear.

Neto also went close at the other end, firing over from a tight angle as the teams entered the half level.

Rogers breaks the deadlock before Martinez sees red

It took just five minutes of the second half for Chelsea to go ahead with a brilliant individual effort from Rogers.

United conceded possession inside their own half, allowing Romeo Lavia to find the England international.

Rogers drove straight at the visiting defence, skipped two challenges and calmly lifted the ball past the advancing Lammens to make it 1-0.

United tried to respond but their hopes suffered a major setback when Martinez picked up two yellow cards in the space of four minutes.

The Argentine was initially booked in the 59th minute for repeatedly tripping Rogers during a dangerous Chelsea attack.

Moments later, he challenged Fofana inside the box as Palmer took a corner, with the Chelsea defender going to ground.

Referee Peter Bankes initially allowed play to continue but was sent to the pitch monitor after a VAR intervention.

After reviewing the incident, Bankes awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card, reducing United to 10 men.

Palmer stepped forward in the 64th minute and curled his penalty past Lammens, who got a hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent it from finding the back of the net.

The goal was Palmer’s 50th in the Premier League for Chelsea, reaching the milestone in just 105 appearances.

Carrick responded by introducing Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven, but the visitors struggled to create chances with their numerical disadvantage.

Estevao thought he had added a third in the 72nd minute after collecting Palmer’s pass and firing into the roof of the net, only to be ruled offside by VAR.

The Brazilian continued to cause problems and forced another excellent save from Lammens late on.

United almost pulled one back in stoppage time when Mbeumo connected with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, but Penders produced a superb fingertip save to deflect the ball onto the crossbar.

Palmer then missed a clear chance to make it 3-0, while substitute Valentin Barco failed to connect with Malo Gusto’s cross at the far post.
