Álvarez earns a point for Atlético
Julián Álvarez scored his first goal of the season for 10-man Atletico Madrid when he came from behind. 1-1 draw with Stuttgart in the Champions League.
Stuttgart looked to make it three wins from three to start the league stage when Jamie Leweling had a narrow effort to break the deadlock in the 36th minute.
However, Álvarez, who failed in his bid to force a move to Barcelona in the summer, responded two minutes into the second half, finding the top right corner from Ademola Lookman’s first-time pass.
Atlético were reduced to 10 in the 64th minute when Morten Hjulmand saw red for a horrible challenge on Angelo Stiller. However, Stuttgart could not make their extra man count.
Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund bounced back from defeat to Bodo/Glimt last time out as a Serhou Guirassy brace gave them a 2-1 win at Sabah in Azerbaijan.
Bodo, meanwhile, made Napoli work very hard for their first win of the league stage.
Matteo Politano opened the scoring for Napoli after just 53 seconds, only for Bodo to restore parity when Jens Petter Hauge slotted into the bottom right corner.
Scott McTominay put Napoli back in front in the 41st minute, only for Andreas Helmersen to equalize and Bodo hit back again.
However, McTominay doubled his tally with a close-range header to put Napoli on the scoresheet for a third time, and an Odin Bjortuft own goal made the points safe for the hosts before Sondre Brunstad Fet pulled one back in injury time.
Roma joined Napoli for their first win of the league stage, beating Slovan Bratislava 4-0, but it’s three defeats from three for Portuguese champions Porto after Guus Til’s effort gave PSV Eindhoven victory at the Estadio do Dragao.
Elsewhere, Slavia Prague picked up their first point of the stage as Pavel Kacor’s stoppage-time goal earned them a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce.
