Former sixth man of the year Montrezl Harrell in an interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson. Harrell, 32, practiced last Saturday for the Rio Grande Vipers, owned by the Rockets.
“All in all, I’m not going to lie, it was good, man” he said. “I was able to get down there, put in a couple of rounds, and the practice I had after practice with the coaching staff went really well.”
Harrell, who last played in the NBA in the 2022-23 season, has since spent time in Australia, China and Puerto Rico. This summer, he set a Big3 single-game scoring record with 42 points and joined a team of former Louisville players in the basketball tournament. He believes that playing in such different environments has helped sharpen his game.
“Every system has a guy who sets screens, drives hard to the basket, draws defenders and makes it easy for other guys to create open shots,” – said Harrell. “Wherever you see it fit, it’s always going to be a factor and it’s always going to play. Even in today’s NBA game, yes, you have more 3-pointers and more space and big men who can pick and choose, but if you look at every team — even the ones that have won the last couple of years — they’ve had a dominant shooting threat to the point that that role puts pressure on the defense to collapse, opening up kick-outs for wide shots are still a big part of my game.
