Playing next year counts.
Playing this year is not. But it was previously under the US Ryder Cup team’s qualifying system, and its elimination, announced Wednesday, represents a significant change for the Americans, who next year will seek to win the Cup on European turf for the first time since 1993.
“I have worked diligently with our team and am pleased to implement a new qualification process for the 2027 US Ryder Cup Team,” the captain of the United States. Jim Furyk said in a release from the PGA of America.
“We have an exceptional mix of veterans and rising stars, and this system will help us identify the strongest players in September 2027.”
It won’t change the number of captain’s picks – Furyk will make six of those during the week of August 30. But the other six U.S. players will be determined under a qualifying system that begins with the PGA Tour’s American Express tournament, which runs from Jan. 21-24, and ends with the Tour’s BMW Championship, set for Aug. 19-22. In all, points will be awarded in 31 events.
Below is a breakdown of what the winners earn under the 2027 qualification system (players who make the cut and finish the tournament will also receive points and that breakdown can be found here. here):
– Major championships: 3,000 points
– Players Championship: 2,850 points
– Signature PGA Tour and playoff events: 2,250 points
– 2027 PGA Tour events: 1,500 points (For the Zurich Classic, a team event, partners must be eligible for the US team; the events of the opposite field have no points.)
In recent Ryder Cups, US players have earned points with money earned in that year’s tournaments, along with money earned in the previous year’s marquee events; last yearfor example, the Americans were rewarded for playing at the 2024 Majors and Players Championship. Why the change? This places an emphasis solely on form over the eight months of a Ryder Cup year. Why are they taking it away from the money earned? In May at the PGA Championship, Furyk told reporters that because the money in golf has changed in the last five years, “we really need to take a look at some sort of fair assessment of how to identify some simulations.”
The release also said that points ranking does not guarantee selection and players must meet eligibility requirements for the event which will be played on September 17-19, 2027 in Adare Manor in Ireland. U European selection system started two weeks ago.
“As I said from the beginning,” Furyk said in the release, “this role was very attractive to me because I like the passion, the camaraderie and the deep sense of brotherhood among this group of American players. I’m excited for the qualification to start in January and to see them compete at the highest level for a place on our team.”
