Volkov (41-11) defeated fellow Russian Rizvan Kuniev (14-4-1, 1 NC) by unanimous decision on Saturday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, where the judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27. Known for his soft-spoken demeanor, Volkov says his improved English has helped him express himself to fans and the media.
He drew attention during fight week by appearing at a pre-fight press conference and questioning the UFC CEO Dana White for a title shot. After beating Kuniev, Volkov explained that he liked the exchanges.
“I enjoy it all week; I really enjoy it,” Volkov said in a post-fight interview. “People thought I was doing it to promote myself or something; I was just doing it for fun. I started learning more English; when I went to the US, I became more confident in my English and it gives me more opportunities to talk to all of you.”
“He’s good, but I’m better.” Alexander Volkov leaves #UFC333 with unanimous victory and looks ahead to next month’s title fight in New York City main card results ➡️ https://t.co/sBG9QXkS3p @VisitAbuDhabi | @InAbuDhabi | #InAbuDhabi https://t.co/opS63M1XlC
