AFC confirms seeding for revamped Women’s Olympic qualifying format

November 5: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will hold the draw for the Asian qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 women’s Olympic football tournament on November 12 at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AFC’s new format for Olympic qualification sees the tournament take place after the conclusion of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which Japan won in March.

The top eight teams from the Asian Cup will compete in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, fighting for two spots at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, the ninth time a women’s football competition has been held at the Olympic Games.

Only four Asian teams have qualified for the Olympics: Australia, People’s Republic of China, Korea People’s Republic of China and Japan. All are aiming for a comeback, while South Korea, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Uzbekistan are chasing a first Olympic qualification.

The draw will create two groups of four with games played at home and away over six days.

The winner of each group qualifies for Los Angeles 2028.

The group runners-up will enter a home-and-away knockout format on 28 February (first leg) and 4 March (first leg) 2028 in the Asian Qualifying Playoff, with the winner progressing to the Intercontinental Playoff of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament against Argentina, the Copa América Femenina Ecuador 2025, to play for third place in Los Angeles.

test seeding:
Pot 1: Japan (5), DPRK Korea (12)
Pot 2: Australia (15), Korea Republic (17)
Pot 3: China PR (18), Chinese Taipei (38)
Pot 4: Philippines (39), Uzbekistan (51)
