September 28: Barcelona has launched Barça Fan Lab, a new digital fan platform built with technology partner Andamio on the Cardano blockchain, as the club dives into Web3 for fan engagement and recognition.
The platform connects to the existing BarçaID system, allowing supporters to complete learning paths and community activities before obtaining verifiable digital credentials and access tokens, stored in an individual Cardano wallet. It is part of Cardano’s community-driven grant program, Project Catalyst Fund 13.
The content is structured around four areas. The first covers the history, identity and values of the club, including the meaning of ‘More than a club’. A second addresses sustainability, inclusion, women’s empowerment and responsible digital innovation. The third looks at linking physical communities with digital participation, and the fourth presents practical Web3 applications, from digital collectibles and loyalty systems to NFTs and smart contracts.
Barcelona says these are areas of learning and experimentation rather than confirmed use cases, and the long-term goal is a scalable engagement model for its global fan base.
It’s an interesting move and one that will divide opinion. Blockchain and Web3 in football have a checkered recent history, with fan tokens attracting a lot of skepticism. Positioning this as a participation-driven educational platform rather than a straight monetization game is a more careful approach. It remains to be seen whether Barça’s global support embraces it or greets it with the same caution that has been encountered with other crypto companies in the game.
