This year marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. In 2001, New York native D-Von Dudley was signed to WWE, and In a recent video posted on his YouTube channelhe referred to September 11.
For years, Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden has been viewed as WWE’s historic home arena and spiritual center, but On the day of the attack, WWE was doing a show in Houston, Texas. Dudley admitted that every time he thinks about the tragedy, it doesn’t get any easier for him. Although not in New York that day, he and countless others around the world felt the emotional upheaval.
D-Von recalled that he learned about the news through his tag partner Bubba Ray Dudley, who called him to tell him the news. “He says, ‘Turn on the news on D-Von,’ and I thought I was watching a movie. I thought maybe I was on HBO or something because I couldn’t fathom two planes hitting the World Trade Center, and when I realized it was real, my heart just dropped,” he said.
Footage of the attacks played repeatedly on the news left D-Von wondering if he had witnessed the end of the world. Eventually, D-Von met up with Bubba and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as they were all traveling together. “We got into the car and went to any restaurant that was open,” he recalls. “I remember driving and the street was empty, deserted, as if everyone had left the world and we were the only ones there. That was the feeling I got.’
