Leeds continued his unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a resounding 4-1 win Newcastle monday night football
Daniel Farke’s men blew the Magpies away three quick goals towards the end of the first half, the first a Sean Steur own goal from an Ao Tanaka shot, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbing the other two.
Noah Okafor’s volley put Leeds in front shortly after the break, with Bazoumana Toure grabbing a consolation for the visitors.
Leeds were still able to see out a comprehensive win that took them up to fourth, and also inflicted a first defeat of the season on Newcastle.
Leeds fired up in the first half
The home side got off to a quick start as Anton Stach broke into the box but he opted to find the shooting Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and the visitors were able to clear.
Leeds were then denied a penalty when the ball hit Mathias Fernandez-Pardo’s hand, but the officials and VAR ruled it was accidental from the summer signing, which may be another point of contention this weekend after Sunday’s events at Old Trafford.
Lukas Hornicek was then forced into a superior save to stop Jaden Bogle’s clever reverse finish as the Whites continued to pile on the pressure in the first half.
There were still some nervy moments for the hosts though, with James Trafford, who almost joined Newcastle last summer, twice taking too long on the ball and almost allowing Yoane Wissa to pounce.
Leeds took a deserved lead when Ao Tanaka’s effort found the back of the net after his initial shot took a huge double deflection off Lewis Miley and Stach, leaving the Newcastle defense and goalkeeper helpless as the ball floated into the net.
Daniel Farke’s side doubled their lead just two minutes later, with Calvert-Lewin rising highest to head Jaden Bogle’s eye-catching cross past the Newcastle keeper. The striker’s aerial feature gave Leeds a major advantage and left the hosts with a mountain to climb.
Calvert-Lewin wasn’t done there, adding a third before the interval to complete a first-half brace. The forward beat a weak challenge from Sven Botman after Leeds sent a simple ball over the top, before calmly slotting his finish into the net.
Leeds’ dominance continues
After the break, Newcastle had a few moments to try and assert a bit more authority on the game, with Lewis Hall going close with a shot.
But in reality those moments were all too rare and Leeds had their fourth when a long serve was only cleared to Okafor, who volleyed the ball home in the first half to continue an impressive performance from the hosts.
It was the kind of dominance the Elland Road crowd has rarely seen in the Premier League, with this the first time Leeds have held a 4-0 lead since 2001.
It was hard to see how the Magpies could find a way back into the game, but it looked likely to come through Wissa, who was their brightest spark of the night.
The Congolese striker flicked a fine ball across the face of goal, before Harvey Barnes saw a penalty appear as a flurry.
They were finally able to celebrate a goal in the dying minutes, with Toure ending Leeds’ hopes of a clean sheet with Tarik Muharemovic’s error allowing the youngster to score his first Toon goal.
