Dave Roberts explained moving Shohei Ohtani back to the leadoff spot as the Dodgers faced elimination in NLCS Game 4 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
When asked how and when he informed Ohtani of the decision, Roberts revealed that there was no advance conversation.
“I didn’t tell him. I just posted the lineup.”
Roberts discussed:
– Why Ohtani returned to the leadoff spot
– Making the change without informing Ohtani beforehand
– What he liked about Ohtani’s recent work and Game 3 at-bats
– Giving Ohtani the opportunity to receive five plate appearances
– Shaking up an offense that has struggled throughout the NLCS
– Moving Will Smith back up in the lineup
– Starting Kiké Hernández and Miguel Rojas
– Keeping Max Muncy available off the bench
– Why Yoshinobu Yamamoto was unavailable
– Whether Dodgers pitchers were tipping pitches
– Playing freely with the season on the line
– Drawing from his historic 2004 comeback with Boston
Roberts acknowledged that part of his decision came from wanting the season to remain in the hands of one of baseball’s greatest players.
“There is something to that—absolutely.”
However, Roberts said Ohtani’s recent work also gave him a baseball reason to make the move. Ohtani remained at Dodger Stadium until approximately 9 p.m. two nights earlier while working on his swing.
“I feel good about him taking five at-bats and giving us our best chance to win and produce runs tonight.”
With the Dodgers trailing 3-0, Roberts wants the team to play without fear.
“What do we have to lose? There might not be a tomorrow.”
Roberts was part of the only MLB team to overcome a 3-0 postseason deficit and said the most important factor is what the players inside the clubhouse believe.
