The Denver Broncos defeated Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks in a 17-14 overtime victory Thursday night.
Will Lutz hit a 53-yard field goal to win it at Mile High Stadium to put Denver up 4-2 and drop the defending champion Seahawks to 3-3.
Seattle had taken the lead in the first quarter on a Jason Myers field goal, before the Broncos put together two scores in the second — one that ended with a four-yard score by JK Dobbins and the other with an RJ Harvey run.
They didn’t find the end zone again and managed just 168 total yards to Seattle’s 353, but kept the game close with a tremendous defensive performance that included five sacks and two interceptions by Seattle quarterback Darnold.
Darnold completed just 27 of 51 attempts with a quarterback rating of 52.6, but was able to string together two fourth-quarter field goals to send the game into overtime as Denver struggled to move the ball on its own. Broncos QB Bo Nix threw for just 107 yards in a crushing outing.
George Holani ran from 1 yard out on an 11-play, 67-yard drive with five minutes left, with Darnold converting the two-point conversion to Rashid Shaheed with a tip-in in the back of the end zone to bring Seattle within three minutes.
The Seahawks defense held its own, and after a Shaheed punt return gave Darnold great field position with less than a minute left, Myers was good from 34 yards out to send the game into overtime.
However, on their first possession in OT, Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian got in front of Shaheed for an interception, and excellent field position allowed Lutz to hit the winner.
