Former WWE star Drake Maverick was the cornerstone of the company’s 24/7 championship divisionwhen title in Savage Backstage since 2019. The star would go after R-Truth as well as many celebrities who held the title. In An interview with Simon MillerMaverick looked back fondly on the era and said he believes his ingenuity helped show WWE what the title could be after he wasn’t even going to get a shot at it in the first place.
“When I look back on it, I didn’t realize at the time (those were) the good days,” he said. “When I look back on it, it’s just the best. I shouldn’t even have been involved. I was brought to Raw every week because I was the general manager of 205 Live at the time… I was always brought to television on Mondays if they needed me for something, whether it was digital or otherwise.”
Maverick recalled that back then he was always going from Raw to WWE SmackDown, which was taped on Tuesdays. He said it was Adam Pearce who vouched for him to be in the division 24/7 because he was always “at the bottom”. He recalled one of the first segments where Titus O’Neil won the belt in the ring and then the race for the gold was on.
“I remember we caught Bobby Lashley and Baron Corbin backstage, everybody running around,” he said. “This was not going into business for myself, I don’t want to call it, but taking advantage of the moment. But believe me, I did a lot of work for myself with this. I stopped, looked at Bobby, looked at Corbin, said “Sorry.” And just kept running.”
