Vancouver Whitecaps to remain at BC Place for now

October 1: The Vancouver Whitecaps are staying at BC Place for at least one more season, but the club’s long-term future in the city is still very much up for grabs.

The Whitecaps have agreed an extension to their lease covering the shortened Major League Soccer (MLS) “sprint season” in 2027, allowing the club to start selling season tickets while discussions continue over a more permanent stadium arrangement.

MLS will run a 14-game regular season from February to May 2027 before the single-elimination playoffs, then switch to its new summer-to-spring schedule starting in July.

Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster made it clear that the lease extension buys time rather than solving the problem.

“(The extension) should just be a tool, and it should just be the role that allows us to get away with ticket sales,” he said. “But we all need to continue to work on what a long-term deal that improves our situation should and could look like.”

The club has been up for sale since December 2024, and its ownership group has repeatedly said it wants the Whitecaps to remain in Vancouver. Finding a buyer willing to do so has been complicated by the economy of BC Place.

The 55,000-seat stadium is owned and operated by the provincial Crown corporation PavCo, leaving the Whitecaps without the level of control over matchday and commercial revenue enjoyed by many of their MLS rivals.

“With the existing deal, we’re still on the revenue end (of the league),” Schuster said. “We have to find solutions in the contract model, how we can grow and how other incomes in the stadium can also grow with us.”

There’s at least more premium inventory to sell, given that BC Place received a C$196 million upgrade ahead of this summer’s World Cup, and the Whitecaps are now introducing a new Tunnel Club and Creekside Terrace hospitality area.

They also reminded some of their current season ticket holders to brace themselves for higher prices where their seats are now within these premium sections.

The timing is a bit awkward: Vancouver has a newly upgraded stadium and a confirmed home for early 2027, but there’s still no deal covering what comes after. However, they did offer some long-term sporting security on Tuesday, extending the contract of German veteran Thomas Müller through the sprint season.

Beyond that, both Müller and the Whitecaps are marked with a question mark.

“People should know we’re here, we’re going to stay in the sprint season,” Schuster said. “So the club is still not going away, and nothing is happening yet… And the only way you can show us your support and help is by buying tickets and coming to the games.”
