Yamileth Mercado and her team call for action to be taken against the corner of their youngest conqueror.
The promoters for the reigning WBC junior featherweight title have a formal complaint with the Ohio State Athletic Commission and the Association of Boxing Commissions against Jordan Maldonado, the head coach / manager / brother-in-law of pound-for-pound star Amanda Serrano. submitted. In a letter received from BoxingScene.com and first reported by Salvador ‘Chava’ Rodriguez of ESPN Deportes, Mercado’s co-promoter Zanfer Boxing and 2M Box Promotions questioned the way Maldanado would fare after Serrano’s victory over Mercado behaved.
Serrano outperformed Mexico’s Mercado (18-3, 5KOs) in their ten round WBC / WBO / IBO featherweight title bout on August 29 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. During and after the bout, Maldonado was seen on camera verbally mocking Mercado’s corner, with the boxer’s representatives claiming his actions were beyond a few harsh words.
“We hereby submit an official complaint and demand immediate action against Mr. Jordan Maldonado, Head [trainer] by champion Amanda Serrano for his unacceptable offensive actions against our boxer Yamileth Mercado last Sunday the 29th Mauricio Madero, CEO of 2M Box Promotions, makes multiple claims. “Mister. Maldonado intimidated and molested our fighter throughout the fight, telling her that she was a coward and a shame for Mexican boxing, along with many other bad words that we’d rather not repeat.
“At the end of the fight, he ran to our corner to start a physical altercation.”
Serrano (41-1, 30KOs) defended her current featherweight title for the second time in a bout where she was selected by event handlers as the main support on the Showtime pay-per-view card. The show was led by social media star and undefeated boxing rookie Jake Paul (4-0, 3KOs), who was first forced to go the distance when he met former UFC welterweight title holder Tyron Woodley (0- 1, 0KOs in boxing) exceeded) over eight rounds.
Serrano was also forced to overcome the distance, although her remarkable punching power was evident in the physical damage inflicted on the Mercado. The fighters were professional throughout the setup and immediately after the fight they respected each other and Serrano praised the toughness shown by their opponent.
“Amanda Serrano is a lady who has always behaved in a sporty and fair manner, she is a great champion and won the fight convincingly,” emphasize the Mercado promoters. “At the end of the fight, both fighters gave each other an exemplary hug in the middle of the ring and showed the world the beauty of our sport. The same goes for promoter Lou DiBella, who always showed Yamileth and the team respect – very professional.
“Our absolute respect and admiration for champion Serrano and promoter DiBella.”
Her observation of Maldonado, however, was a different matter.
“We urge your honorable commission to investigate this case thoroughly and to take note of the following:
· Jordan Maldonado has violated not only the rules of the Commission, but also all unwritten rules of fair play and ethical behavior. His verbal attacks on a 23-year-old lady are absurd and cannot be tolerated.
· Jordan Maldonado attempted a fist fight against Mercados Corner, who were publicly humiliated, but thanks to their training and athletic integrity, they had to swallow their pride and ridicule themselves at the time.
· Jordan Maldonado continued to molest and insult Yamileth while they were taking her to the ambulance. In fact, the paramedic decided to rush to the ambulance to avoid further problems.
[Writer’s note: the above allegation remains unverified, beyond what was revealed by Mercado through personal Instagram account]
Jordan Maldonado was expelled from the Puerto Rico Boxing Commission in the last fight he participated in in that country, so his behavior is known and it is time to take corrective action.
“Boxing and society do not need these behaviors and we are sure that their intervention will be the solution we are looking for, that is, justice. Our good behavior prevented an open battle from breaking out at a great event with millions of spectators around the world, so we are now calling for corrective action to be taken on your organization. “
The claims made by the Mercado promoters were in line with the general reaction of home viewers. Most appreciated Serrano’s performance but were disappointed by Maldonado’s lack of professionalism.
“There is international outrage on this issue, millions have witnessed this happening round after round, which spoiled the beauty of the fight. Against this background, we expect with all due respect that a decision will be made as soon as possible. We have videos and audios as well as reactions on social networks as evidence of our sayings.
“We ask for yours too [o]Organization to open a full investigation by interviewing other boxers who were victims of Mr. Maldonado’s behavior during their fights against Amanda Serrano.
