The Swiss star was supposed to meet with Jose Mourinho in Italy – but that no longer happens
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Granit Xhaka’s proposed move to Roma will be canceled – and that he expects the midfielder to be a “key member” of the team this year.
Earlier this summer, the defensive midfielder appeared destined to team up with Jose Mourinho at the Serie A club, despite reports circulating last week that Xhaka would stay with the Gunners.
Xhaka recently returned to training before scoring in Arsenal’s 2-1 friendly defeat by Chelsea on Sunday. Arteta’s comments came after the game.
What was said
“Granite [Xhaka] will stay with us. He is an important member of our squad, ”confirmed Arteta.
Xhaka had the home side under brief pressure when he headed home after a Nicolas Pepe corner – the highlight of the game for Arteta’s side.
Injury update from Thomas Partey
Meanwhile, the manager also confirmed that midfielder Thomas Partey’s injury during that game is of great concern to the Gunners.
“It’s not looking good at the moment because he was in pain and couldn’t continue,” he said of the former Atletico Madrid star, who was dismissed in the Emirates five minutes before the break.
The Gunners currently have Mohamed Elneny and new signing Albert Sambi to fill the void Partey left but the blow is worrying as the Gunners begin their Premier League campaign against Brentford on August 13.
Before that, they have to negotiate one last friendly against Tottenham on Sunday.
