Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico’s only current male world champion, Wilfredo ‘Bimbito’ Mendez of Trujillo Alto, will be on Saturday the 14th.
‘Bimbito’ (16-1, 6 KOs) will set his £ 105 World Boxing Organization (WBO) world title against Nicaraguan Carlos Buitrago (32-6-1, 18 KOs).
The undercard will be broadcast live on DAZN from 9 p.m. ET and will feature a welterweight main event in which Vergil Ortiz will defend his international WBO title against Egidijus Kavaliauskas.
“Buitrago is coming after taking part in massive fights against McWilliams Arroyo for 112 pounds and World Champion Elwin Soto for 108 pounds. We want motivated opponents so that the fans come home happy,” said Mendez.
“This will be my first fight in the US and on DAZN. A lot of people who have never seen me fight will be able to see me and that is very motivating for me. I feel in my best shape, right now with the title return to Puerto Rico.
“I want to dedicate this fight to Jasmine Camacho-Quinn because her sacrifice brought incredible results at the Olympics with the gold medal she won for Puerto Rico. It has united us as a people more and more often to motivate future generations. I thank her so much and we know that she will continue to do better for her people. “
