Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, known as the Big Three of the Premier Soccer League, are the biggest clubs in South Africa.

However, the debate about the largest club in the country has been raging for many years and will undoubtedly never stop.

Infrastructure

Kaizer Chiefs Village

The Chiefs Village in Naturena, Johannesburg, is a world-class property with complex playing fields, offices, changing rooms and a retail store.

The infrastructure is widely considered to be the best in the country and there is also a strength training facility with fitness equipment, a swimming pool, saunas, ice baths and showers.

Sundowns’ headquarters are in Chloorkop, Kempton Park and its world-class facilities include offices, exercise fields, a recreational pool, changing rooms and hot tubs.

Unlike Chiefs and Sundowns, Pirates do not have their own headquarters and are currently renting offices in Houghton, Johannesburg, having previously rented offices in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The Buccaneers currently use Rand Stadium in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, owned by the City of Johannesburg, as a training ground.

It is important to note that none of the current 16 PSL clubs have stadiums.

Chiefs have long been known as the most popular football club in the country, and this becomes clear when you look at their following on the world’s largest social media platforms.

With over 3.5 million likes on Facebook, 2.2 million followers on Twitter and 690,000 followers on Instagram, Amakhosi boasts a fan base of over six million followers on social media.

Her rival in Soweto, Pirates, ranks second with over 2.3 million likes on Facebook, 1.7 million followers on Twitter and 479,000 on Instagram and currently has over 4.5 million followers.

While Sundowns has just over 2 million followers on social media – over a million likes on Facebook, 867,000 million followers on Twitter and 315,000 on Instagram.

FNB Stadium, the largest stadium in the country, is unsurprisingly home to the country’s most popular club, the Chiefs.

With a capacity of 94,736 people, the place of worship is not only the largest in South Africa, but on the entire continent.

According to Transfermarkt, the average attendance at Amakhosi’s home games in the 2019/20 season was 22,015 before fans were banned from the stadium due to Covid-19.

The FNB Stadium is usually at full capacity during the Soweto Derby game with the Chiefs and their main rivals, the Pirates.

The pirates’ home ground is Orlando Stadium with a capacity of 40,000 and an average home attendance of 14,873.

While the Sundowns at their home stadium, the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, which has a capacity of 51,762 people, draw an average of 9,000 home visitors.

The Chiefs remain the most highly decorated club in the country, despite winning their last major trophy in 2015.

The Glamor Boys have won the most major trophies – 55 – including a record of 13 league cups (Telkom Knockout), a record of 15 South African FA Cups (Nedbank Cup) and a record of 13 top 8 (MTN8) titles, 13 national league titles (PSL) and Caf African Cup Winners’ Cup.

On the flip side, Pirates have the second most trophies with 30 titles that have won nine national championship titles, eight South African FA Cups, eight top 8 titles, League Cup, Caf Champions League and Caf Super Cup.

Sundowns is the third most decorated club in the country with 28 trophies, including a record 14 national league titles, five South African FA Cups, four league cups, three top 8 titles, the Caf Champions League and the Caf Super Cup.
