Who has the best midfield in the Premier League?

The Premier League is littered with countless top stars all over the field.

The midfield is currently one of the strongest positions in the English top league.

Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne are some of the best creative midfielders in the world.

N’Golo Kante is also one of, if not the best, defensive minded midfielder to play in Europe right now.

Edge would also win the 2018 World Cup along with Premier League midfielder Paul Pogba, while Chelsea’s Jorginho was one of the standout players at Euro 2020, which his Italian side won.

But which club currently has the best overall midfielder? 101 took a look at England’s top midfielders right now to make a final decision.

Manchester United

The first club we need to look into is Manchester United. As mentioned briefly, United have some incredibly talented midfielders in their ranks.

Bruno Fernandes would join Man United at the end of the 2020 winter window. He then secured a Champions League spot for the Red Devils in 2019/20 almost in the blink of an eye and scored eight goals and seven assists in just 14 league games.

Fernandes made the Premier League shine again in 2020/21 – with an incredible 18 goals and 11 assists in 37 PL games.

Man United also have Paul Pogba in midfield, who proved to be an exceptional midfielder in his day, especially in the offensive sense.

However, where Man United is seriously let down is in defensive midfield. Right now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only has one aging Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay that he can choose to play deeply.

Matic was a top notch CDM in its heyday, but it is clear that it is no longer what it was. Fred and McTominay, meanwhile, cannot act as the sole CDM, which means that Solskjaer often has to either drop or get Pogba out of position in order to pick up the McFred pivot.

While United have some undeniable talent in their midfield, they won’t have the best in the league until they have a top-notch defensive midfielder.

Leicester City

Next up is a team that may be a little overlooked when it comes to the quality of their midfield.

Leicester generally works with two central midfielders and one central attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 or a 3-4-1-2 or they can use a more traditional 4-4-2 that only requires two central midfielders.

For the former two options, James Maddison is generally provided as the main CAM. This is an incredibly solid option as Maddison has been a consistent provider of goals and assists – he scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 31 league games last season.

Then, a little further back, Leicester has one of the best midfielders in the league.

Wilfred Ndidi is extremely reliable defensively, in this respect maybe only behind N’Golo Kante in the PL.

Then Youri is Tieleman’s partner of the Nigerian, who is a bit more aggressive of the two. Tielemans is the perfect central midfielder. He’s energetic, quick, has a good passing game in his locker, and can be effective in his own box too.

Brendan Rodgers also took on the duties of 22-year-old Boubakary Soumare this summer. Soumare – who won Ligue 1 with Lille in 2020/21 – will no doubt be an excellent option to rotate with the aforementioned duo at the base of Leicester midfield.

Liverpool

Liverpool have had one of the most consistently solid midfields in the Premier League for a number of years.

Fabinho is an exceptional central defensive midfielder. Jordan Henderson is a seasoned leader whose footballing skills are a little underestimated by many.

But that’s only two-thirds of Jürgen Klopp’s midfield three-pointers, Georginio Wijnaldum has now moved to PSG on a free transfer.

Hence, it will be interesting to see how Liverpool work when they have to forego Wijnaldum, a man who has been ubiquitous and one of the Reds’ most reliable options.

Of course, you might point out that Thiago will fit into Wijnaldum’s place without any problems. However, the Spaniard had a pretty difficult start to life in the PL and whether he can actually produce what Klopp wants in a central midfielder remains to be seen.

Liverpool now also have Curtis Jones in midfield. The 20-year-old kept improving the more he showed in the previous campaign and he should be set for a very bright future on Merseyside.

Chelsea

Chelsea now operate with a 3-4-2-1 formation, where Mason Mount is typically used as a left or right center forward.

Hence, for the base of this series, he should probably be viewed as part of the Blues’ attack rather than a midfield.

However, that doesn’t mean there is a lack of quality in Chelsea midfield. N’Golo Kante is one of the best midfielders in the world and any team that can use the French has a chance to win something every year.

Outside of Kante, Tuchel has to resort to Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. The former didn’t have the best start to life in England, but its quality has since prevailed as the Italian put in an outstanding performance en route to the Champions League and Euro 2020. Mateo Kovacic is also a serious workhorse for Chelsea who always puts in a solid 7 / 10s every week.

Manchester city

The last team on this list is, of course, Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s men have dominated the English game for years and boast one thing if not the best midfield.

Fernandinho continues to be a key figure at City despite his age. His ability to control and launch attacks from deep down is superb, as is his tactical fouling to interrupt enemy attacks.

25-year-old Rodri has also continued to improve since joining from Atletico and will become a viable replacement for Fernandinho.

Up ahead, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and occasionally Phil Foden make up City’s star-studded midfield

De Bruyne is, of course, probably the best creative midfielder in the world and Gündogan has just had a great 2020/21 season. And while it’s not official yet, Jack Grealish is also expected to join City midfield this summer:

Given that City are way ahead in midfield for both depth and quality, they likely deserve the Premier League best midfield title.
