England start Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed put the hosts in control after India pooled for 78 runs in the first innings on Day 1 of the ongoing Third Test at Headingley, Leeds. England managed to beat India’s 78 runs without losing a wicket.

Both opening players beat their respective half centuries, taking the team to 120/0 in 42 overs before the officials announced the stumps. While Burns is unbeaten at 52, Hameed is missing with 60 runs. The home team leads India with 42 runs.

Teams that finish with a 1st innings on opening day without losing a wicket:

  • 157/0 – ENG against AUS (98) MCG, 2011
  • 120/0 – ENG v IND (78) Leeds 2021

Before that, English pacemakers dominated the action, claimed all 10 wickets and reduced the number of visitors to just 78. India lost the most important wickets from KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the first session of the game.

The touring party lost its remaining clubs in the second session. Rohit with 19 out of 105 balls and Rahane with 18 out of 54 deliveries were their highest running hits.

England’s leading wicket taker James Anderson showed his charisma once again, collecting three scalps for just six runs in his first and only eight overs period. Apart from Anderson, pace trio of Craigg Overton, Ollie Robinson and Sam Curran all shone with the ball to further damage India’s striking unit.

While Overton bagged a three-wicket haul for 14 runs, Robinson and Curran each collected two scalps for 16 and 27 runs, respectively.
