Tommy McCarthy Livid Over Third Scorecard, Desires Billam-Smith Rematch

Cruiserweight contender Tommy McCarthy is furious about the outcome of his fight with Chris Billam-Smith last Saturday.

The two boxers fought for the EBU, Commonwealth and British titles at Fight Camp in Brentwood, with Bill-Smith walking away with a tight twelve-round decision.

One judge saw 115-114 for McCarthy, the second scored 115-114 for Billam-Smith, and the third scored a 116-112 for Billam-Smith.

McCarthy is now calling for a second fight, with promoter Eddie Hearn promising to do a rematch.

It is unknown whether this rematch will take place immediately.

“When I heard that score of 116-112, I just walked out of the ring in disgust, I just couldn’t believe it. I passed Eddie Hearn and I was furious but he said, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll do it again’ and I know he can do it, ”McCarthy told the Belfast Telegraph.

“How could one of the judges have eight to four rounds after such a fight? I saw what happened on social media and it went crazy when most people said I won the fight.

“It was an uphill battle and I sometimes felt the pace, but I was strong and I was the better man in the championship laps. The only fight I want next is the rematch. It’s just so annoying and hurts a lot because I know that it could have won a lot more comfortably if I had stayed with boxing.

“I should have done it more decisively. There were too many rounds, especially in the intermediate grades, which were too subjective. I know I’m the better boxer, the more skilled fighter, and I shouldn’t have let it get that close. Maybe because I seriously injured him early on, it kept me from my game schedule … I only know if the rematch takes place, it will be another fight. “
