The Philadelphia Flyers have hired Jason Smith and Riley Armstrong to assist the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Smith and Armstrong will serve alongside new Phantoms head coach, Ian Laperriere.
Smith, 47, has played more than 1,000 National Hockey League games as a fullback with New Jersey, Toronto, Edmonton, Philadelphia and Ottawa. In 1995 he won a Calder Cup championship with the Albany River Rats.
The native of Calgary, Alta., Has been an Associate Coach at Prince George (WHL) since 2019. Previously, he was Kelowna’s head coach in the WHL for three seasons and was assistant to the Ottawa Senators from 2014 to 2016.
Armstrong, 36, is joining the Phantoms after two years as head coach from Maine (ECHL). After retiring in 2016, he was also an assistant in Wheeling (ECHL) for two years.
Armstrong’s 12-year professional career spanned 404 games in the AHL with Cleveland, Worcester, Grand Rapids, Abbotsford, Binghamton and Hamilton. He also appeared in two NHL games with San Jose.
