Shardul Thakur got his heart out in the first two sessions and he was eventually rewarded for his persistence when he knocked down dangerous-looking English captain Joe Root.
It all happened past the first ball of the 59th when Shardul got one to viciously push Joe Root back.
Root was running late and the ball hit his pads just in front of the wicket.
It was so dead that the referee raised his finger in a flash and Root didn’t even bother to challenge the call.
Roots wicket came at the worst possible time for England, who had already lost their last three wickets in 17 runs.
It only got worse for the home side when Shardul Thakur backed it up with another scalp in the same over when he fired Ollie Robinson over a duck.
Robinson, in an attempt to pull Shardul, gave Mohammed Shami some catching practice mid-game when England broke in on 8/159.
Since then, Jasprit Bumrah has captured Stuart Broad lbw to leave England with nine losses but Sam Curran struggles in the middle as England aim to break the 200-run mark.
