Piers Morgan shut down by Olympic Silver medalist

Piers Morgan criticised the men’s high jump stars for sharing the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 56-year-old was not impressed with the decision by Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim and Italian Gianmarco Tamberi to share the win.

Morgan fumed on Twitter : “They should have done the jump-off. It’s an Olympic final, not a tea party. Can’t ‘share’ Gold medals.”

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge was slammed by Gabby Logan and Gary Lineker for suggesting “nobody cares about these covid-ravaged Olympics.”

Gabby fired back: “I think you are wrong Piers. I think some people do care. You might not, but I don’t think you speak for everyone.”

Match of the Day host Lineker waded in and said: “You’re wrong on this one. It’s exhilarating, uplifting and inspiring. Exactly what’s needed in these most depressing of times.”

The Italian and Qatari athletes jumped an impressive height of 2.37m, but the pair failed all three attempts at the next height.

They spoke to an official about their options, where Barshim asked if they could both get a gold medal.

Normally there would be a jump off, but they were told that “it’s possible if you both decide” to share the prize – and before he could finish speaking the gesture was made and sparked wild celebrations.

Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar agreed to share the gold medal

An ecstatic Tamberi said: “This night is memorable and we made our dreams come true.

“We have passed through many difficult times and now to win the Olympic championship together – I don’t know what to say.

“I have dreamed, we have dreamed it, so many times and now we did it.”

The pair won their first Olympic gold medals

Barshim, who won the silver medal in the 2020 Olympics, added: “I’m really happy. It’s an amazing feeling. I’m proud of myself. Winning the gold at the Olympics is a dream.

“I’m really grateful and we have been through a lot.”

His win marks Qatar’s second gold medal in as many days after the success of weightlifter Fares Ibrahim.

Tamberi watched his compatriot Marcell Jacobs take gold in the men’s 100m, crossing the line in a time of 9.80 seconds and becoming the first Italian to win gold at the event.
