The 26-year-old returned from injury to score after a header but his goal wasn’t enough to get his side off to a good start

Uganda’s international Bevis Mugabi was on target when Motherwell suffered their first defeat of the season 3-2 to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Kevin van Veen and Mugabi scored for the home team in the 12th and 29th minutes before Kyle Magennis, Christian Doidge and Martin Boyle won the guests with goals in the 17th, 56th and 70th minutes respectively.

New signing Kevin van Veen gave Motherwell the lead after a 12-minute cross from Jake Carroll, but Hibernian leveled five minutes later after Magennis shot from close range.

Comeback after a shoulder injury, Mugabi restored the home side’s lead in the 29th minute after Carroll delivered the ball from a free kick and the Ugandan player hit him in the head. The ball bounced into Matt Macey’s right post and into the net.

After Motherwell took a 2-1 lead at half-time, Hibernian returned for the second half with a different approach as they turned the game in their favor after Christian Doidge equalized minutes after coming on in the 56th minute .

Jack Ross’s team then won the game in the 70th minute when Boyle took the opportunity to score from the penalty spot after defender Stephen O’Donnell handled the ball in the penalty area.

Despite continued pressure from Mugabi’s Motherwell to take a tie out of the game, Hibernian stayed close behind to win the game at Fir Park.

It was a good performance from Mugabi, who played at the heart of the defense alongside Ricki Lamie, and his performance could be good news for new Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September.

Mugabi was entitled to represent England or Uganda at international level, but chose the East African nation and in August 2016 he was appointed to the Cranes team for the first time for the friendly against Kenya and the 2017 Africa Cup qualifier against the Comoros .

Although Mugabi was unable to play during the time he was withdrawn from the squad by Yeovil Town, he finally made his debut for Uganda in a 3-1 friendly win over Sao Tome and Principe on March 24, 2018.

In the World Cup qualification, the cranes will be bundled in Group E alongside Mali, its neighbors Kenya and Rwanda.
