Maple Leafs signal Menell to one-year deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defender Brennan Menell to a one-year two-way deal.

Menell, 24, was acquired from Toronto on July 28 in a deal with the Minnesota Wild. A native of Woodbury, Minnesota, spent the last season at Dinamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League, finishing the season with 38 points (five goals, 33 assists) in 47 minutes of regular season games and seven points (one goal, six assists) in five playoffs. Menell was named the First Team AHL All-Star in 2019-20 when he accumulated 47 points in 57 games for the Iowa Wild. He also took part in the AHL All-Star Classic 2020.

In 199 AHL competitions over three seasons with Iowa, Menell has scored 15 goals and 101 assists for 116 points. During the 2019 Calder Cup playoffs, he added four assists in 11 games.

Menell originally signed with Minnesota as a free agent on September 26, 2017. He has played five NHL games in his career with the Wild.
