Anthony Martial refuses advance loan from Lyon

Man United France international Anthony Martial turned down a late Ligue 1 loan advance from Olympique Lyonnais tonight despite his future at Old Trafford remaining unclear.

As reported by Le Equipe’s Get French Football, despite the Red Devils’ summer recruitment campaign that saw Cristiano Ronaldo return to Old Trafford and Jadon Sancho to Manchester, the eclectic Martial has no intention of returning to France, albeit in the other side.

It is perhaps a curious choice by Martial, who is now one of nine players fighting for three or four attacking spots on Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team and who will almost certainly have to be put back on the flank if he regularly has a chance in this one Present season.

Quiet Influential; Martial may still have the role of Man United

It’s hard to read the room when it comes to judging Martial’s tenure at Man United since arriving from AS Monaco in 2015/16.

On the surface, the data suggests he was much better than many are willing to admit. In 261 appearances for the Red Devils, Martial has scored 78 goals and 50 assists in six seasons for a goal contribution of a shade under 0.50 contributions per game. For a player who has never been consistently first choice, these numbers aren’t half bad.

He has delivered over the two seasons that have seen Martial spend over 2000 minutes on the pitch, including an impressive 2019-20 season in which he scored 17 Premier League goals and added seven assists. On top of that, Martial has broken the league double-digit threshold three times and his contributions – albeit subdued – could play an important role this season.

There is no telling how Sancho will get used to Premier League life again, nor is there a current option at the club that Edinson Cavani could replace internally after his contract expires next summer.

He may be forced to fight for his place this season, even after Dan James completes his move to Leeds, but there is still scope for Martial to have a long-term future at Man United, considering he’s only just now Is 25 years old. old.
