Messi won’t renew at Barcelona

Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi will not be in their squad for the coming season.

Messi has been with Barcelona since 2005 and has played 778 games for the club, scoring 672 goals, 308 assists and 6 ballon d’ors.

Widely regarded as one of the, if not the greatest players of his generation, Messi had become a free agent on July 1, 2021 but was supposed to remain a Barcelona player on reduced terms. However, Marca reported tonight that the deal had failed and Barcelona have since confirmed the news on their official channels.

What the club says

In a statement, the Catalan club said:

Although FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi have reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen due to financial and structural obstacles (Spanish league regulations).

As a result of this situation, Messi will not stay at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club are ultimately not fulfilled.

FC Barcelona would like to thank the player wholeheartedly for his contribution to the expansion of the club and wish him all the best for his professional and private future.

Messi has been an important part of Barcelona’s club since his emergence and has often single-handedly won them games, trophies and championship titles. After a successful international summer winning the Copa America with Argentina, it was widely believed that he would stay at Barcelona but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Speculation is already circulating as to where Messi might end up, with Paris Saint Germain appearing to be the favorite for his signature.
