The Reds boss is hoping to get more minutes into the Dutch mid-half and Joe Gomez before taking on the Canaries on August 14th
Jürgen Klopp will give Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez every chance to fight for the Premier League season opener against Norwich.
The Reds will be back in friendly action later this week when they take on Bologna, with the countdown to the trip to Carrow Road on August 14th.
Liverpool will hope to be in full strength for meeting their newly promoted domestic rivals as Van Dijk and Gomez attempt to intrude on Klopp’s plans after missing much of the 2020-21 season with serious knee injuries.
What was said
Asked by the reds official website Whether he plans to give Van Dijk and Gomez playing time against Bologna, Klopp said: “Hopefully yes. That’s what it looks like at the moment.”
“I want to be very clear, we’re not pushing anything. We just don’t do it. We wait a bit, the players are coming, we have now with Dr. Andreas Schlumberger is a real specialist who is in constant conversation and always observes everything.
“We know exactly how they feel – how they really feel and not what they tell us because they obviously want to play again. Sometimes we swap Virgil and Joe out a little so the intensity may not get too high, but in general it looks really good.
“How many minutes on Thursday? I don’t know, but there will be a few minutes for sure.”
Are Van Dijk and Gomez ready?
Two international defenders celebrated their long-awaited return for Liverpool in the 4-3 defeat in the preseason against Hertha Berlin.
Van Dijk has not made a compulsory appearance for the Reds since leaving the Merseyside derby with Everton on October 17, 2020.
Gomez lasted just a month longer than his Dutch colleague before his season ended with an injury sustained while away from England.
