Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas is looking forward to putting some leather on his next opponent, welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, the two will meet on August 14th at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The fight is presented by DAZN.
Kavaliauskas sounded like a kid in a candy store when asked recently if he should face a fighter who many consider to be one of the deadliest puncher in the 147 pound class.
“He’s a tough fighter, a good fighter,” Kavaliauskas told FightHype.com. “I like his style. I think it’s going to be a super good fight.
“I’m hyped for this fight. I’ve been waiting for this fight. It will be very interesting. I want to get in the ring with him. ”
Kavaliauskas (22-1-1, 18 KOs), a decorated amateur who represented his native Lithuania twice in the Olympics, last fought Mikael Zewski in September and knocked him out in the eighth round. However, his most notable moment as a professional was a loss when he met WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford on December 14, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Crawford stopped Kavaliauskas in the ninth round, although the Lithuanian managed to make it competitive in the early stages, including a punch that Crawford dropped when it wasn’t officially called a knockdown.
Ortiz (17-0, 17 KOs), a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, is considered a rising attraction for having stopped each of his opponents. He scored a hard-earned technical knockout against former junior welterweight champion – and Texan – Maurice Hooker in the seventh round of their welterweight bout last March at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. The fight with Kavaliauskas would mark Ortiz’s third fight as headlining in his home state. (Ortiz lives and trains in California).
“We will see [if Ortiz has] Experience and we’ll see [his] Intelligence in the ring, [his] Pressure, blows, the force, ”said Kavaliauskas. “He’s a good boxer, a smart boxer, a fun fighter, so there’ll be fireworks there … His last fight [against Hooker] he looked good, but he was met many times, me [could] tell. But it was an easy fight for him. ”
