Jasper Philipsen exits the Vuelta forward of stage 11

Alpecin-Fenix announced ahead of the Vuelta a España stage 11 that their sprinter Jasper Philipsen was headed home early. Philipsen, who won two stages in the first week of the Vuelta, developed a “mild fever” overnight. The team opted to let Philipsen go home and recover for the remainder of the 2021 season.

Philipsen outsprinted Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange) to win the second stage of the Vuelta into Burgos. He then sprinted to victory again on stage 5 in Albacete.

The Vuelta stages to come favour breakaways and general classification battles, with only two stages for the fast men.
