Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan expressed satisfaction when the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Irfan Pathan did not stop naming sports stadiums after renowned athletes instead of politicians. Irfan Pathan retired from international cricket in January 2020.

When the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad was renamed Narendra Modi Stadium, several social media users raised concerns. In fact, there are many stadiums named after the political leaders in India. These include the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Former Indian Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru have also named ten prominent stadiums after them. We also recently saw Feroz Shah Kotla’s grounds in Delhi, renamed after the late Arun Jaitley.
Hopefully in the future the names of the sports stadiums will also be named after athletes: Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan said he welcomes the shift in sports awards named after sports personalities and hopes this is the start of something new. The former swing bowler with his left arm poked at the government and wanted stadiums to be named after sports icons.
“I definitely welcome this step. Athletes who receive recognition and accolades after him or her. Hopefully the start of many such things in sport (…) Hopefully in the future the names of the sports stadiums will also be named after athletes. ” Pathan tweeted.
