‘I don’t know who two-thirds of them are’ on PGA Tour

Phil Mickelson certainly sounds like he’s enjoying the PGA Tour Champions – winning three of the four events he’s participated in helps. His last win came on Sunday in Jacksonville, Florida, in the Constellation Furyk and Friends.

But it’s not just about winning. The 51-year-old prefers the aggressive manner he can show on the Seniors Round, and said he enjoys playing with people he knows better while being less familiar with the aspiring golfers on the PGA Tour.

“I don’t feel like there are tournaments on the regular tour that really get me excited to come out and play, so I enjoy getting out of here and working on a few things that I’m trying to improve and to do play with guys I know. I know all these guys here, ”he said on Sunday after winning at Timuquana Country Club.

A four hour delay during Friday’s first round in Timuquana sent everyone in.

“With this rain delay, I go into the locker room and everyone I know in there while there are so many new, young, fresh players on the regular tour, I don’t know who two-thirds of them are.”

Jim Furyk became the second golfer to win his first two senior rounds last year. It wasn’t long before Mickelson finished third. Now he has three wins in four games and more than $ 750,000 in profit.

“It’s a good start. I have fun, I enjoy playing here. I enjoy being with the guys, I enjoy the golf courses, how I can be a bit more aggressive and like if I made a mistake in 5th place, I can still recover. You do that on the regular tour, you are simply eaten alive. You just can’t make those mistakes there and have a chance to compete and compete and win. So I like that you don’t have to be perfect and I can get away with a shot or two here or there, so it’s fun to play aggressively. “

Make no mistake: Mickelson does not declare that he will no longer play on the PGA Tour from now on. After all, he’s the reigning PGA championship winner.

“I think if I can play and compete well in tournaments on the regular tour and maybe win a time or two like the PGA and have some credibility getting out of here that would be a good thing because it shows how high “A level of performance is reached out here on the Champions Tour,” he said. “If I can keep up with the world rankings and take part in some regular tour events, when I get out of here I hope to help.”

Mickelson’s next PGA Tour Champions event will take place October 22-24 at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Virginia, when the PGA Tour takes place at the Zozo Championship in Japan. He will then most likely win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at the end of the season on November 11-14. Play in Phoenix on November 11th, the same week as the PGA Tour’s Houston Open, which Mickelson hosted in 2020 because it was champions the week before the pandemic delay.
