The former defender believes the Portuguese star has all the qualities necessary to take on leadership roles at Etihad Stadium in the years to come
Ruben Dias is quickly becoming a “real candidate for captain” at Manchester City, according to Richard Dunne.
City spent £ 65 million ($ 90 million) last summer bringing slides from Benfica to Manchester.
Dias formed an impressive partnership with John Stones on defense as Pep Guardiola’s side finished with the best defensive record in the league, and Dunne believes he can reach even greater heights in the years to come.
What was said
The former City defender praised Dias for special praise following the team’s 4-0 friendly win against Barnsley on Saturday and supported him in inheriting the Etihad Stadium captain’s armband if he continues on his current path.
“He will try to get the season off to a good start and develop himself because there was no one around him as a center-back last season,” Dunne told the club’s official media channel.
“You could imagine that he has settled in and feels more comfortable so that he can improve again. It’s very important that he starts well and builds on last season’s form.
“The other players will know him and understand what he’s good at and what to expect, so we hope it continues like this. Although he is still very young, he has that stature and aura about him. Looking to the future, I think he could be a real captain candidate in the next few years. “
Dias’ outstanding campaign 2020-21
In his debut campaign at City, Dias made 50 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal.
The 24-year-old helped the Manchester team to the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in a row, along with his latest crown, and was also named Player of the Year for the Football Writers’ Association and Player of the Year in the Premier League at the end of the season.
Who is the current Man City captain?
Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has been City captain since Vincent Kompany left at the end of the 2018/19 season. The 36-year-old signed a new one-year contract in June that will keep him at Etihad Stadium until next summer, but Dias could inherit the armband from his teammate if his services are not continued beyond that.
