David Blough and the Detroit Lions hosted a watch party to see his wife Melissa Gonzalez qualify for the women’s 400m hurdles semifinals on Friday.
While Melissa Gonzalez competes for Colombia at the 2020 Tokyo Games, her husband David Blough and his Detroit Lions teammates root them during their training camp in the United States.
Gonzalez and Blough are high school lovers from Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas. Blough continued to play quarterback for the Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten while Gonzalez stayed in state to run for the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12. Although Blough had to stay behind for Lions training camp, here he is and his Detroit teammate cheer her on Friday.
Gonzalez qualified for the 400m hurdles semifinals while the boys watched in Michigan.

This is the kind of viral social media content we’re here for. Obviously, the whole global pandemic made it especially difficult for the Olympics to happen at all. They have been postponed for a year. Although we have a vaccine for COVID-19, many of the same health restrictions apply as the virus mutates and affects the livelihoods of everyone involved.
While Blough doesn’t have much to play in his third season of Purdue, it isn’t as if he can travel the world in late July. He has to prepare for a football season. While he couldn’t have preferred to be in Tokyo in person, it’s great to see him and his teammates take root in Gonzalez as she seeks to fulfill their lifelong dream of winning Olympic gold.
Gonzalez is one step closer to becoming Olympic champion for Colombia this year.
