Former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew certainly thinks Oleksandr Usyk is a puncher enough to get a one-stop win over Anthony Joshua.
Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, will challenge Joshua for the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles on September 25th at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
This competition will be Usyk’s third heavyweight outing.
Usyk didn’t look as spectacular in his two heavyweight appearances as he did in his cruiserweight competitions.
Bellew was knocked out by Usyk in November 2018. It was Usyk’s last cruiserweight appearance and the last fight of Bellew’s career.
While some Usyks have questioned strength in the heavyweight division, Bellew is not one of those critics.
“Believe me, mate, he hits hard enough to bring me down. He’s exceptional. He’s the best I’ve ever come across. He’s so technically perfect. His footwork is on another level,” said Bellew of the DAZN Boxing Show.
For the upcoming fight, Usyk will be trained by Anatoly Lomachenko, the father and trainer of the three-tier champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
According to Bellew, this scenario makes the upcoming fight much more difficult.
“It’s an uphill battle, I’m not going to lie. It’s a very, very tough fight. If anything, it just got tougher because Usyk has now returned with Lomachenko’s father. That makes it even harder because they’re going to come up with a game plan that will try to negate all the good things Anthony Joshua does, “Bellew told Talk Sport.
“You will try to take everything away from him. Usyk does it so well. He takes your strengths from you before he takes care of the implementation of his own strengths. And if you take away your strengths, you are lost. What he does with his feet – he is extraordinary. I think it’s a really tough fight, I think it’s really dangerous. “
