Anthony Fowler: I Want To Be at Prime of My Sport in Liam Smith Struggle

Fight Camp, Brentwood – Anthony Fowler had to work hard for victory as he paused in the eighth round against late substitute rival Rico Mueller and set up a tasty national duel with Liverpool rival Liam Smith on October 9th.

The German, who came to the UK earlier this week to replace Roberto Garcia after an injury, had a lot of ambition early in the fight but Fowler always landed the heavy shots and the pressure finally showed.

The Liverpudlian, who became a dad during the week, has now won six straight fights since he suffered his only professional loss to Scott Fitzgerald at M&S Bank Arena Liverpool in March 2019.

“My next opponent is a really good fighter, much better than him, but I needed the rounds,” said Fowler afterwards to DAZN. “I thought I wiggled it on round two but thought, ‘Not today’. My last fight was three rounds and I thought, ‘I need rounds today,’ so I stepped back and worked on a few things.

“The only thing I haven’t had in my career are laps, I’ve always blown up my opponents and haven’t really learned a lot. I study a lot in the gym but that’s what matters, it doesn’t mean anything in the gym.

“I’m from the south of Liverpool, Liam’s (Smith) from the north. I don’t mind, I respect Liam a lot, he’s a really good fighter, ten times better than this boy tonight so I have to do my best. I don’t refuse fights, I’ve boxed everyone since day one, I asked for all these big fights, but it never happened to me.

“Tonight I wanted to box Roberto Garcia, a good, seasoned veteran. Rico Mueller fought well and I’m glad he replaced Garcia because I said in the ring: “Thank you for giving it your all”, after six laps he was six laps behind and he was still trying. Liam is a much higher level, but I needed the rounds and that’s what I got. “
